Swedana Procedures
- Abhyanga
The massage of the body with warm oil is called as Abhyanga. Daily abhyanga enhances the well-being of the body and longevity. Abhyanga is a daily regimen and also in the treatment of various illnesses. - Shirodhara
The pouring of the warm medicated oil on the forehead from a specific height for a specific period of time in a continuous stream is called as Shirodhara. Shirodhara help to relives stress and strain and also in the management of various diseases. - Sarvanga dhara
The pouring of warm medicated oil or herbal liquids whole over the body is called as sarvanga dhara. A metallic jar is used to pour the liquid in a single stream from a specific height for a specific time period. - Nadisweda
A type of fomentation procedure done using a nadi (tube/pipe) is called as nadisweda. Nadisweda comes under the Swedana karma which is usually done after an oil massage. - Pizhichil
The pouring of warm medicated oil from a specific height whole over the body for a specific period of time. A piece of Cotton cloth or a metallic jar is used to pour the oil. - Patra pinda sweda
A type of therapeutic massage done with warm medicated oil and pottali made of leaves (herbal poultice). Pottali is prepared with herbal powders and fresh herbal leaves. - Snehapana
The internal administration of Sneha (lipids) is called as snehapana. Snehapana is performed as a pre-procedure for purificatory purpose or for the curative purpose. - Udwartana
The forceful rubbing of herbal powders in the upward direction of the body is called as Udwartana. Udwartana is not a procedure limited to treat obesity rather it’s a treatment for wide range of ailments. - Jaloukavacharana
Very popularly known as leech therapy existing since ages back. Jaloukavacharana is a prevalent therapeutic treatment for various ailments like skin diseases, hematological disorders etc. Nonpoisonous leeches are identified and made to suck the vitiated blood from the affected area. - Lepam
The topical application of herbal pastes over the affected area for a stipulated time is called as Lepam. The herbal paste is made of fresh herbs, herbal powders, oils etc. There are various lepam formulations mentioned for curative purpose and facial uses. - Raktamokshana
Vitiated blood is a cause for the manifestation of various diseases. The procedure of letting the vitiated blood out of the body is called as Raktamokshana. There are different types of raktamokshana using sharp instruments, without using sharp instruments, puncturing techniques, using leeches etc. - Siravyadhana
The method of letting the vitiated blood out of the body by venipuncture is called as Siravyadha. This therapeutic method is considered as superior among the raktamokshana procedures and it’s done under the proper assistance of a Physician. - Vamana karma
The medical vomiting or emesis using the medicated emetics mentioned in Ayurveda under the supervision of a Physician is called as Vamana Karma. Vamana Karma is the major purification therapy to detox the body and mind. - Virechana karma
The elimination of morbid doshas from the body through purgation is called as virechana karma. Virechana is an effective purification therapy to detox the body and mind. - Niruha basti
The administration of herbal decoction through the anal route is called as Niruha Basti. It is also called as Asthapana Basti or Kashaya Basti. Niruha Basti is the treatment of choice for Vata Disorders. - Anuvasana basti
The administration of fats through the anal route is called as Anuvasana Basti. Anuvasana Basti is an effective treatment for vata disorders. - Nasya
The instillation of medicated errhins through the nostrils is called as Nasya. Herbal powders, herbals extract, oil, ghee etc. are used as medicines to detoxify the morbid Dosha from head and neck. - Kavala
Holding the oil in mouth is called as Kavala. For retention, oils or herbal liquids can be used. A little quantity of medicated liquid which is possibly to be moved in the mouth is taken and it is moved thoroughly for stipulated time period. - Gandoosha
Oral Gargling is called as Gandoosha. Oil or herbal liquids can be used to Gandoosha. - Dhoomapana
The therapeutic way of herbal smoking using the leaves or herbal powders is called as Dhoomapana. Depending upon the condition of the person, the type of dhoomapana is administered. - Kati basti
The retention of warm medicated oil in kati by making a circular wall made of dough is called as Kati basti. The temperature of the oil is maintained by replacing the warm oil every 10 minutes. - Agnikarma
The management of various medical conditions by inflicting burns directly over the tissue surfaces using different materials is called as Agnikarma. The tools used for cauterisation are called as Dahanopakarana. - Navarakizhi
Navarakizhi is also called as Shali Shashtika Pinda Sweda. Rice harvested in 60 days is cooked well and then it is processed with herbal decoction and milk to make the rice poultice for navarakizhi. - Choorna pinda sweda
Choorna pinda sweda is a type of sweda which is also known as podikizhi. Medicated powders are heated and tied in a bolus to provide the fomentation to the afflicted part of the body. - Uttarabasti
The administration of medicated oils or herbal decoctions through the urethral and vaginal orifices is called as Uttarabasti. It is very effective in genito-urinary disorders of both males and females.
